Early travellers along the Main Road needed more than a swig of rum to take the perilous journey through the heart of Van Dieman's Land. Notorious bushrangers and robbers prowled its wooded verges, seeking hapless passengers in the horse-drawn carriages that rattled through the night, eager to reach the next destination - and the relative safety of a wayside inn. Today, many continue that tradition of hospitality.
