Evandale

Annual National Penny Farthing Championships, Evandale Clarendon House, via Evandale

This historic village is situated on the South Esk River, a few kilometres beyond Launceston airport.  Evandale has retained its charm and ambience from the early days of the colony.  One of its inhabitants was connected to an Australian icon. 

A convict named John Kelly lived in Evandale. He gained a certain fame and notoriety when his son, Ned, became a successful bushranger! 

Evandale has become internationally renowned for its annual Penny Farthing Championships and Village Fair which is held every February on the streets of the town.

Evandale also has a very popular Sunday country market, lovely cafes and bakeries, and some interesting specialist shops. 

March brings plenty of activity in Evandale. The Glover Prize Tasmania a prestigious event that celebrates the life and works of John Glover. Also Railex, a model railway exhibition.

Every second year enjoy the National Windjam Festival, a celebration including conertina, button accordion, mouth organ, jaw harp and gum leaf at this free reed music festival. Featuring workshops, sessions, concerts, bush and folk crafts and the national button-box championships.

Just south of Evandale, you may wish to turn off and follow the sign to the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company. Savour complimentary tastings of their superb sauces, jams, chutneys, relishes and condiments which are now served at some of the world's leading resorts.  A fascinating topiary nursery and gardens are also available for your enjoyment.

Nearby is 'Clarendon' homestead which was built by the wealthy grazier and merchant, James Cox in 1836.  Cox's father, William Cox built the first road across the Blue Mountains in NSW.  Set in extensive formal gardens and beautiful parklands, 'Clarendon' is considered one of the great Georgian houses in Australia.  It was gifted to the National Trust in 1962.

The Evandale History Society work to preserve the written, photographic and oral history of Evandale. The Society has a selection of early photographs and maps on display at the Evandale Community Centre, located in the Visitor Information Centre.
