Cressy is a small town situated in the heart of the Northern Midlands rural district. It was originally developed to service surrounding wheat farms in the 1850s. Today, the Cressy area is a mecca for fly fishing.
Known as the 'Gateway to Trout Fishing Paradise' and the central highlands, Cressy is Tasmania's only 'troutified' township and home to the well known, Tasmanian Trout Expo which is held annually. For a souvenir or gift with a difference, look out for the Trout Cook Book, full of delicious ways to cook your catch. It is available via the Expo website, or venues in the town. Enjoy spotting some bright and quirky trout in the main street!
The nearby Macquarie river is a renowned meadow stream, attracting anglers from all over the world; Brumby's Creek is also a very popular spot.
If you are a keen fly-fishing enthusiast, or you'd like to learn the art of casting a fly, there are a number of trout fishing guides and related services in the area who know these waters well, and will be happy to help you.
