The preserved heritage in Oatlands makes the town a unique national treasure.
Oatlands has the largest number of colonial buildings in a village setting in Australia. Much of the stone was quarried from the shores of Lake Dulverton, the town's man-made lake which is now a wildlife sanctuary.
The Oatlands Courthouse (1829) is the oldest in the country; the Callington Mill (1836) is a steam and wind flour mill and a rare reminder of an industrial era long gone. Experience the 'working mill' soundscape as you climb to the top to enjoy the view.
Visit Casaveen for stylish, vibrant knitwear and accessories made from merino wool produced by the McShane family in the Tasmanian midlands. Factory tours are available and a café provides delicious fresh food.
Oatlands also has several, interesting antiques shops and home and garden wares shops.
Drop into The Heritage Highway Visitor Information Centre in the town's main street to find out so much more about this fascinating town and its surrounding areas.
While in Oatlands, try your hand at the Skulduggery game 'Forgery For Fools' and see if you can solve a real crime that occurred in 1836.
