Bagdad

Chauncy Vale Wildlife Sanctury, Bagdad

The lower Bagdad valley formed some of the first arable farmland in the new colony of Van Diemen's Land.

Chauncy Vale Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Tasmania's oldest conservation areas. It was the home of famous children's author, Nan Chauncy.  The Sanctuary includes rare dry eucalypts, secluded bush valleys, sandstone caves and prolific native fauna.  It was used by local aborigines prior to European settlement and was a favorite hideout for bushrangers. The elusive thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) was frequently seen here in the 1920s.

Chauncy Vale is a rich natural experience, a restful and interesting place to walk, picnic and relax.

During the first weeks of the Iraq war, the website of this tiny town was bombarded by confused internet surfers from around the world trying to get through to Iraqis.
