New York Times names state as top destination
Tasmania has been recognised by The New York Times as a top travel destination.
The State is the only Australian location included in the publication's list of the Top 44 Places To Go in 2009.
The Times list particularly praised Tasmanian wines.
"Some of the world's most delectable pinot noirs, chardonnays and sparkling wines are being grown in Australia's remote island State," the Times said.
The paper has 1.4 million subscribers and about 12 million people visit The New York Times website daily.
Tourism Minister Michelle O'Bynre said it was fantastic publicity and an example of the tourism industry being kept in the minds of potential travellers all over the world.
