A tribute to our Bush Nurses in Avoca

22/4/2009

Tuesday May 12 is International Nurses Day. A very fitting day to unveil a tribute the the intrepid Bush Nurses who worked in the Fingal Valley; dealing singlehandedly with medical emergencies, sickness and child birth - often in harsh and trying conditions that we couldn't even imagine in our society today.

Dr Marita Bardenhagen, author of the book "Ordinary women: Extraordinary Lives" that tells the rich story of Tasmani's Bush Nurses will be guest speaker.

The Bush Nurse feature will be officially unveiled by Tasmania's Chief Nurse, Fiona Stoker.

Afterwards enjoy the hospitality of the Avoca residents with light refreshments and hot drinks in the Town Hall.

Come along to this sparkling occasion starting at noon, Boucher Park, Avoca (on the western end of the town - corner of Falmouth Street and St Pauls place) on Tuesday May 12. Please RSVP by Wednesday May 6 to Lorraine Green on 6397 7315 or email lorraine.green@northmidlands.tas.gov.au .

A "MUST SEE" is Dr Bardenhagen's intriguing Bush Nurse memorabilia archival materials on display at the Avoca Post Office for several weeks, starting Monday May 11.
