The delightfully named, Dr. James Appleyard made an interesting contribution to Longford's garden streetscape while he was church warden at Christ Church, located in the historic town of Longford.
In the 1870s, Dr. Appleyard decided to replant the entire groungds around the Longford Anglican Church. With assistance from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hobart and generous subscriptions from wealthy, and presumably God-fearing locals, he wished to have every tree mentioned in the Bible represented in the church grounds. We dont know if he actually succeeded, but his legacy remains in the leafy parkland still enjoyed by both visitors and locals to this day.
