Quarantine

Tasmania is disease free and aims to keep things that way. You must not take in any fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, soil or plants. There are bins to dump any of these items at all entry points and inspections with trained sniffer dogs are carried out. It may sound stringent, but this unspoiled wilderness could easily lose the 'un' by one apple introducing a pest or disease.

Protecting Tasmania's freshwater fishery

Didymo is a highly invasive freshwater alga that is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, and recently discovered in New Zealand where it has invaded a number of waterways causing a major concern for the fishery, affecting the water quality and ecosystem.

Thankfully Didymo is not present in Australia and we want to keep it that way.

It takes just one single cell in one single drop of water for Didymo to be spread between waterways. If you are bringing fishing gear, waders, and in particular, felt-soled boots into Tasmania, it is important to ensure the equipment is cleaned and thoroughly dried before entry to Tasmania. Please visit the Inland Fisheries Service website for more information and advice on how to clean your gear effectively.
